Hatherwood The Amber Adder – Lidl No 3 (3.5/5)

The Amber Adder is a dark ale. Head is long lasting with a rich off white colour.

The taste is richer than some. Coffee and caramel undertones make for a lovely but not overly gassy drink.

No bitter aftertaste just caramel and a nice warm feeling half way through the bottle.

It’s sold as a Amber ale and I’d say thats right. It’s not a lager, not a IPA, not a bitter and not a traditional beer.

I’d love to find something to hate about this as it’s a Lidl beer but it’s not half bad. It’s not a perfect drink and is very middle of the road but that’s not a bad thing. Especially taking into consideration of the price. I’d not think someone had given me a cheap drink had i received it in a glass. I’d be happy to drink this whilst at a BBQ or just in the sun enjoying the weather with friends.

  1. I’m not a beer snob. I enjoy beers, from all over the world (biggest surprise was the range of dark beers and porters in Hong Kong – and the English style beers available fom Large and micro breweries in OZ) , and the Hatherwood range is in my opinion among the best buys on the shelves – anywhere. Golden Goose is a refreshing bitter after a session in the garden, Ruby is contentment in an armchair, the Porter is deep and delicious and goes well with beef casseroles & pies. Ginger Grizzly haven’t seen it for a while, why not? It is a delightful refreshing sitting in the sunshine gentle ginger beer – with alcohol! Gecko is a pale IPA with hoppy aftertaste,. I haven’t yet seen Amber Adder or Gnarly Fox on our local shelves. With summer coming up I hope they reintroduce Ginger Grizzly.I keep the Hatherwood range in quantity at home as my ‘house brand’ and they have surprised and delighted many of my friends who typically buy premium price beers, some of which I wouldn’t buy at any price. Lidl’s wine range is excellent too.
