The Harbourmaster Bar & Restaurant, Nelson Quay, Milford Haven

Last week, we were invited to The Harbourmaster in Milford Haven for a celebratory meal.

Prior to the evening, we were asked to provide our food choices. This was simple enough to do but, as a small group, I wondered if this was really necessary.

The Harbourmaster overlooks the boats moored at Milford Harbour Marina. The seating area alongside the bar is lovely. The décor is pretty and they kindly allowed someone to go in early to decorate the table. The bar has a good range of spirits. As a gin fan, I opted for the Bathtub Gin and obligatory Fever-Tree tonic.

Overall, the meal was enjoyable. Everyone received what they had ordered. However, it lacked some of the niceties I would expect. I ordered the most expensive item on the menu, a Surf ‘n’ Turf at £23. The ribeye steak was tasty but had a little too much fat and sinew for my taste. Mr W-K’s steak had similar faults but what you could eat was perfect. Crisp fluffy fries and a mini portabella mushroom were lovely sides, however I missed having some fresh salad leaves on my plate. I would consider this a pretty standard addition to a steak. Mr W-K’s pepper sauce was thin and watery, which was a shame. The trio of prawns on my Surf ‘n’ Turf were not worth spending the extra money on. They were overcooked and small. Aside from these picky bits the meal was great. The Experiments’ burgers were perfectly cooked and the coleslaw was tasty. The usually picky Princess devoured her grilled sausage. I split a salted caramel doughnut pudding with Mr W-K and wished I had ordered my own as it was so good.

The Harbourmaster proved to be a great venue for our family. The menu provides a variety of options, including gluten free, vegan, and vegetarian. Although the steak was tasty, I’d probably opt for a burger next time as I didn’t feel the quality of the steak was quite up to par. There is a good range of beer, ale and wine, if spirits aren’t your thing. The desserts are outstanding and well worth the calories. The staff are friendly, welcoming and attentive. We will definitely re-visit when we are in this part of the country.
