Slimming World Beef and Vegetable Lasagne – Review

Prior to a business trip I wanted to ensure that MrsWK has plenty of slimming world sausages to keep her breakfasts Syn free as possible. Whilst at Iceland (a UK frozen supermarket) I noticed that there were a few new items to the Slimming world range.

Beef and Vegetable Lasagne.

The Slimming World is a range of foods exclusive to Iceland that complement the Slimming world ethos of tasty food that can help you lose weight.  Whilst I cannot really say I’m trying to loose weight. With all the business travel, beer and ale reviews, I work with MrsWK it to keep myself around my target weight.

Let me just state for the record. As with all frozen ready meals there is no point even pretending this is going to be a gourmet meal. So I don’t expect Jamie Oliver to mention this in the Saturday kitchen.

At time of review the Beef was £3.50 and the Vegetable £3.00 however they were available on a 2 for £5 offer

Unsurprisingly both meals look pretty much same same in the packaging. It’s not something I really care about.

Cooking

Both meals have the same cooking instructions. These are so simple that a 5 year old could follow:
Pierce film. Place in center of oven set to 190 degrees for 30 mins. Take film off and repeat for another 30 mins.

Alternatively stick them in a microwave for 20 minutes. Having spoken to the cashier at Iceland she said they taste much better cooked in an oven.  Slimming world also state this on the box.

I MrWK had the Vegetable and MrsWK the beef however we did the typical sharing & tasting of each other’s.

Vegetable Lasagne.

The Vegetable Lasagne is surprisingly tasty. The Lasagne sheets are a little wetter than I normally like. This is likely due to the way the white sauce is made. Being a slimming world meal there is no cheese.  Something I’ll always miss as my home made lasagne is practically running with the stuff.

Whilst the dish is very edible I would have liked a little more spinach mixed in, ironically I felt this lacked iron, or perhaps it was just the lack of meat.

Beef Lasagne

The beef was soft, full of flavour and better than was expected of a frozen ready meal. Don’t get me wrong, this is no Charlie Bigham’s but far better than home brand frozen lasagna that we have tried from other supermarkets.

The texture is typical of a frozen meal, slightly soft but the taste and convenience more than made up for this.

MrsWK also commented on the lack of Cheese however considering this is intentionally absent it’s no surprise. Anyone following the slimming world plan could add cheese as a healthy extra.

Overall view

MrsWK and I enjoyed the meals. Both the Vegetable and Beef Slimming World lasagnes will be something we keep in our freezer for the lazy days where we just cannot be bothered to cook. The beef edges in front both from a flavour and texture perspective.

This is not a matter of being an amazing meal that we will want to eat again and again. This is a gap filler that you can grab when you are busy with other things and can eat without guilt. This will not win any world lasagne tasting awards  (If there isn’t one that would be a travesty) but its good enough to win a place at our freezer bottom drawer.

Good enough is good enough.
