Hatherwood The Green Gecko IPA – Lidl No 2 (3/5)

No 2, The Green Gecko is one of 6 in the Hatherwood range of beers and ales as sold through Lidl supermarkets.

This is sold as a peppery zesty US style IPA brewed with US hops and may favour those that like this style of freshness. Initially there is a sharp bitterness followed by a fresh zestiness that is lasting. The bitterness is not overly aggressive and the peppery taste will overtake this after a few seconds and is lasting.

At 5% it’s quite a strong IPA and after 2 bottles I think you will feel it. Perhaps this is the point. A fresh IPA with punch.

The Green Gecko is not an unpleasant drink, quite contrary, it’s a middle of the road daily drinker that does not cost a lot. It’s unoffensive as it does not try to hard to suit any specialist drinker tastes.

Is this something I’ll buy again? Possibly not. I think there are better drinks out there better suited to my tastebuds however they will likely cost a little more.

  1. I’m a seasoned ale drinker that has attended many a beer festival and sampled far too many ales for one person and yet I must post my appreciation of this particular brew. With a beer cupboard stacked with bottles from all over the country and indeed the world I feel the need to confess that it’s the pale green top that I reach for when I get home from work each day and also the beer I ensure that I stock up with on every visit to the supermarket. It has exactly the right blend of bitterness, flavour, refreshment and strength for my tastes and I’m not ashamed to say it. So hats off to the people at Hatherwood for blending such a beauty, all your beers are good (except the ginger one) but this is excellent, well done!
